NEWS FROM ORCHARD MUSIC
From Orchard Music:-
Christopher Gunning's new CD!
This is the Gunning publicity machine swinging into action again, with the news that Chandos Records have just released a new CD of Christopher’s film and TV music.
The music is performed by the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Rumon Gamba, and also features some soloists with whom Christopher has worked in the past - Craig Ogden, Martin Robertson and Nicole Tibbels.
For Christopher the album has been a labour of love; it provided him with an opportunity to revisit some of his favourite scores, dust them off, and rework them where necessary to make pieces that stand on their own. “Poirot Variants,” for alto saxophone and symphony orchestra, is a mini concerto taking in many of the variations of the famous theme and is a brilliant showpiece for both soloist and orchestra. “La Mome Piaf” is the music he composed for “La Vie en rose,” the film starring Marion Cotillard portraying the life of Edith Piaf. “Rebecca,” featuring a solo cello, is the dark, dramatic and watery music he composed for the TV adaptation of Daphne du Maurier’s novel, and “Firelight,” featuring a solo violin, is the emotionally charged score which unashamedly tugs at the heartstrings. Elsewhere on the CD you can hear Nicole Tibbels singing along with whales in “When the Whales Came,” and, in complete contrast, the epic score Christopher composed for “Cold Lazarus,” the last work for television by Dennis Potter. Poirot is visited again with themes from “Five Little Pigs” and “The Hollow,” while “Pollyanna” is pretty and optimistic. “The Rosemary and Thyme caprice,” featuring Craig Ogden’s guitar, is part Gunning and part quotes from the well known folksong, and “Under Suspicion” is alternately mysterious, extremely violent, and finally romantic. The album winds down with the touching love theme from “Lighthouse Hill.”
