CD REVIEW - THREE AND OUT +NEWS FROM SCREEN ARCHIVES ENTERTAINMENT

Three and Out
Music by Trevor Jones
Contemporary Media Recordings CMR-2008-6 (EU)
16 Tracks 44:48 mins

This new British black comedy has received a good deal of criticism for its subject matter, with many believing the subject of railtrack suicides no laughing matter. I haven't seen the film, so cannot comment, but I do have the music and this is what I think of it.
After recently working in short drama-documentary films that have also enjoyed worthy CD releases on the Contemporary Media recordings label it is good to welcome Trevor Jones back to the big screen, albeit a modest British production. His score for Three and Out, realised by means of the orchestra and rhythm section of the English Sinfonia, with the composer himself featuring on keyboards, starts off jauntily with the guitar-lead "Carpe Diem" - Seize the Day," but then an Irish flavour enters, representing Colm Meaney's suicidal character, in "Three and Out - The Premise." Indeed, Irish elements flavour a good deal of what follows, especially the more melancholy moments, where Sonia Slany's fiddle playing shines; with Jones incorporating the traditional "The Grenadier and the Lady," wistfully voiced by Imelda Staunton in "You're a Menace, Tommy Cassidy;" as well as "An Emigrant's Daughter," within his score, but "The Chase" is more lively end enjoyable. Of course there are plenty of whimsical and caperesque elements to the composer's music as well, as Mackenzie Crook's character seeks to implement his early retirement plan, and the feel-good main theme also returns here and there, with the album concluding with the guitars-heavy, beat-driven "In Pursuit."
All in all, a very entertaining score, a mix of light comedy and Irish melancholia, of which I've always been a fan.
The colourful accompanying booklet, features stills from the film, a brief synposis and notes from Director Jonathan Gershfield and Executive Producer Aaron Gershfield. Order your copy from the Trevor Jones Online Shop at www.trevorjonesfimmusic.com/purchase.html.
